Mobile payments are widely used in China. International visitors can link eligible overseas cards to Alipay or WeChat Pay without opening a Chinese bank account. Card and merchant acceptance can vary, so carry a backup payment method.

Payment fees and limits can change. See the Shanghai government guide to overseas bank cards and check the payment app before confirming.

1. The Golden Rule of the ¥200 RMB ($28 USD) 3% Fee Threshold

For eligible overseas cards, transactions of ¥200 or less are generally exempt from the platform service fee. Transactions above ¥200 may incur a 3% fee on the full amount; promotions and other charges can vary. Check the payment screen and your card issuer’s terms before confirming.

If you want to split a bill, ask the merchant whether separate payments are accepted. Do not assume splitting will be available or remove every fee.

  • Identity verification may be required. The applicable transaction and annual limits depend on your account; check them in the app.
  • Always link at least TWO different cards (e.g., one Visa + one Mastercard from different banks) to BOTH Alipay and WeChat in case your home bank triggers a fraud alert on the first scan.
  • Notify your card issuer (Chase, Amex, Citi, Capital One, Barclays) with a Travel Notice before departure. First-time charges in China without prior notice frequently trigger automated bank anti-fraud freezes.
  • Foreign cards function on official Merchant QR codes (商业收款码) used by shops, restaurants, taxis, and ticket desks, but cannot process Personal QR codes (个人转账码) shown by informal street stalls. Keep ¥200–¥300 in small RMB cash as backup.

2. Why You Still Need Both Apps (Alipay for Transit, WeChat for Menus)

Alipay is unbeatable for transport: tap "Transport (出行)" on the home screen to activate your local Metro/Bus QR code in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, or Guangzhou, and tap the built-in "DiDi" mini-program to hail cars in English without needing a Chinese phone number.

WeChat, however, rules restaurant table ordering and scenic park bookings. Always install both before activating your travel eSIM.

3. Paying in China with Wise, Revolut, YouTrip & Touch ’n Go

Some multi-currency travel cards can be linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay. Eligibility, exchange rates and fees depend on the card, account and transaction; check your issuer’s current terms.

For travelers from Singapore and Malaysia: Singaporean YouTrip and OCBC cards link directly to Alipay. Malaysian travelers can use Touch ’n Go (TNG) eWallet directly in Mainland China without currency exchange hassle thanks to the Alipay+ cross-border merchant network.

  • Wise / Revolut Tip: Select "Charge in local currency (CNY / RMB)" whenever Alipay presents a currency conversion prompt, allowing Wise or Revolut to handle the FX conversion at lower interbank rates.
  • Before paying, check the app’s fee and exchange-rate disclosure as well as any charges from your card issuer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I link Revolut, Wise, or YouTrip debit cards to Alipay without extra fees?

Eligible cards may be linked, but acceptance and fees vary by card and account. Transactions of ¥200 or less are generally exempt from the payment platform service fee; your card issuer may still charge other fees. Check the app and issuer before paying.

Can I pay another individual via peer-to-peer transfer ("Red Packet") using a foreign credit card on WeChat or Alipay?

No. Foreign credit/debit cards linked to Alipay and WeChat Pay only work for merchant QR codes (business accounts, taxis, restaurants, stores). They cannot send personal peer-to-peer transfers or Red Packets. Carry ¥300–¥500 in small RMB banknotes (¥10, ¥20, ¥50) for rare non-merchant stalls.

Why was my linked credit card declined on Alipay or WeChat?

A declined transaction usually comes from two sources: (1) your home bank flagged an unfamiliar foreign charge under its anti-fraud algorithm (open your banking app or call the number on the back of your card to verify), or (2) the stall presented a personal peer-to-peer transfer QR code, which cannot process overseas credit cards. Ask the cashier for their official store merchant code or pay with cash.
